Oh Sienna - "Lost The Plot" by Fiver →

Listen to the album “Lost the Plot” by Fiver. The album tells stories of a number of characters, most of which are battling mental illnesses of varying degrees and circumstances.

In the link above, the album has been set to Jeff Bierk’s videography. I didn’t think Schmidt’s songs could feel more unnerving, but Bierk has nailed it.

I know I’ve posted this link before. I know I’ve championed Schmidt’s songwriting before, whether it be for her work in One Hundred Dollars, The Highest Order, or Fiver. I don’t care. I’ll post it 100 more times. Since I first heard “Forest of Tears”, her body of work has only gotten larger and the messages have become more concise. And those messages seem to ring more true as each day passes. This is great art.

CBC's DNTO with Sook-Yin Lee, "Regrets" →

Simone Schmidt makes an appearance at the 56 minute mark.

I got a teary-eyed listening to the performance. Then had one of the most productive days in history.¹

1. Music is a miracle.

Calm & Collected

"You can lessen your time if you keep in line," well that’s the rules that they told me. So I make my bed and I don’t talk back no matter how small it makes me feel. When the matron calls on some other girl’s shit, I’m as quiet as a drunk at dawn while they strip my room and they tear the only picture of the girl with the eyes like mine. You think that’s right? You think that’s fair? Would you be calm and collected, cool and respectable when someone else comes beatin’ down your door?

I’d done without love till she came about, but I tried to make it work with her father. Had to put him out by her 21st month to make a life for her and me. So it was my surprise when, a year gone by, he comes back first on the door with his pounding. And I’ve no remorse that I used due force to save the girl with the eyes like mine. You think that’s right? You think that’s fair? Would you be calm and collected, cool and respectable when someone else comes beatin’ down your door?

The reports say I was in a bad way when the cops come respond to my call. Can you show me anyone who wouldn’t wanna get high on a night like that? And it’s not for the best that they took my girl, no it’s not for the best that I don’t see her. Though I spared a man who deserved to die, I’m stuck her just the same. And do you think that’s right? Do you think that’s fair? Would you be calm and collected, cool and respectable when someone else comes beatin’ down your door?

Fiver - Calm & Collected

Simeone Schmidt wrote this song in response to the minimum sentence laws in Canada for marijuana possession. I suggest you listen the song 50 times. Listen to the character in the story.

I don’t know if any of you listen to lyrics. I sometimes doubt it, because most of the Fiver and $100 songs I post go unnoticed/0 tags.
