Visors need to be grandfathered. Now. Top flight players like Nicklas Lidstrom, Ryan Getlzlaf, Andrew Ladd, and Vinny Lecavalier have all made the switch to wearing a visor.
I know. All of my favourite players didn’t/don’t wear a visor. Jeremy Roenick, Chris Chelios, Tony Amonte, Chris Pronger, Brent Seabrook, Dave Bolland, etc. No visor looks badass, just like no helmets looked badass back when helmets were grandfathered in.
Things are serious now, though. Manny Malholtra’s eye injury was a breaking point for a lot of guys. It made a lot of guys stop and think.
I was stubborn for the past 9 years. As soon as I turned 18, I took the mask off my helmet. The fogging sucks, but it’s pretty easy to manage. Generally it doesn’t fog when you’re skating. I can understand fog being more of a problem in the NHL with their warm rinks, though. There’s a lot of decent anti-fogs out there, should only have to spray it a few times a game. They have trainers to do it, anyway. All of the excuses of the old I-TECH visors have disappeared.
Oh, and Getzlaf… I’m sorry Easton is making you wear their ugly lids. Ugliest ones I’ve seen since the old XL-7. So many have fallen victim to that helmet. Toews wore an Easton helmet for a season, which was all bad. As far as I’m concerned there are only four acceptable helmets to wear. The Bauer 4500 (can you believe it’s been around for so long?), the new CCM, the old CCM, and the Reebok.
